Obviously, we are not out of the era of massive video game acquisitions and consolidation yet, and one new rumor is something that many fans have theorized about for quite some time, that Sony may be looking t buy Japan’s Square Enix for the PlayStation brand.
This report comes from the PS I Love You show, where Greg Miller says he’s heard that Sony is trying to acquire Square Enix, though it’s unclear what stage of that process may be happening and whether or not it will actually come to pass, and he says to take it with a grain of salt.
(around the 1:15-1:16 hour mark)
Square Enix was in the news this past week after selling Eidos, Crystal Dynamics and a bunch of IPs like Deus Ex, Tomb Raider and Thief to Embracer Group. Now the theory is that the company is “slimming down” to potentially be a more attractive acquisition target.
There’s a long-running connection between Square Enix and PlayStation as the two companies have collaborated on releases many, many times in the past. The idea behind an acquisition is that perhaps Sony could make something like Final Fantasy a PlayStation exclusive series once and for all. Though in the wake of their purchase of Bungie, who knows, as that deal did not require Bungie’s only game franchise, Destiny, to become the exclusive property of PlayStation. Both Destiny and Bungie’s future games are all staying multiplatform. But would the same be true of Square Enix and its remaining IPs? That’s unclear.
This report joins past rumors that it’s actually Microsoft that has been looking to acquire a large Japanese studio and make inroads into that market. But again, the Square Enix and Sony relationship seems so established, MS buying them instead feels unlikely (though I suppose there’s always a number). That’s led some to speculate about Microsoft interest in companies like SEGA or Capcom instead.
Sony, too, has had other rumors swirling about them potentially purchasing FromSoftware, but that ultimately doesn’t have a concrete sourcing foundation and the origins of that most recent report turned out to be something of a misunderstanding. However, “logically” Sony too has a close relationship with FromSoftware, and obviously anyone would want From’s stable of games and talent in their roster as potential exclusives, as proven yet again but GOTY frontrunner Elden Ring.
Essentially, what it comes down to is that if you are not Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or a large tech company, it’s possible you may be acquired by one of the former. The Activision deal proved anything in the industry is possible. In this case, Square Enix selling to Sony does make more senses than most deals, and we’ll see if what Greg Miller has heard does in fact come to pass.
